Kvapil, who will race Saturday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway, apologized to BK Racing, NASCAR, fans and "anyone else that was impacted by Tuesday night." "Obviously, there was a domestic situation Tuesday night with my wife. Regret that that happened," he said after qualifying 41st Thursday night. "Because it is a family, personal matter, we ask for respect and privacy in this situation and we try to work it out together as a family. Im obviously embarrassed about the situation. To top it off, the Stars then went out and signed Hemsky as a free agent - taking two of Ottawas top six forwards from last season. Spezza lasted just one season as team captain and the team once again starts the search at training camp. Karlsson is definitely a candidate, as well as veteran Chris Phillips as he closes out his career with the only team hes ever played for. The 36-year-old starts the year 35 games shy of Alfredssons all-time club record of games played. The team did well to get some help up front in landing centre David Legwand. Hes not a replacement for the numbers Spezza put up, but he provides leadership and is a two-way centre who should definitely flourish under MacLean. For the remainder of the roster, its all a question of progression. If Kyle Turris can put up first-line numbers, then the Spezza void may not be that large, especially if the team continues to get elite production out of Karlsson. Both Anderson and Lehner have the talent to backstop the team to numbers above expectation, but for that to happen the team needs to first get its leadership - and subsequently, its young core - settled. Fantasy - Cullens Player to Watch Mika Zibanejad A 21-year-old centre who was the sixth overall pick in 2011, Zibanejad has been a really good two-way player through his first 120 NHL games, with excellent possession stats, despite finishing with a minus-15 rating last season. With Jason Spezza and Ales Hemsky leaving, there are opportunities in Ottawa for young forwards to play a more significant role, and none are better prepared than Zibanejad, who has averaged under 14 minutes per game to this point in his career. He will theoretically have to compete with veteran centre David Legwand for quality ice time, but if Zibanejad plays 17-18 minutes per game and stays healthy, a 50-point season is possible. TORONTO -- Players on the Edmonton Eskimos and Calgary Stampeders will hold a strike vote Saturday. Veterans on teams outside Alberta have already voted and are in a legal strike position but the Eskimos and Stampeders were unable to vote earlier due to provincial labour laws. If they vote in favour of a strike, the earliest they could do so is Wednesday night in accordance with the legislation. The CFL and its players have been without a collective agreement since May 29. The CFL exhibition season is scheduled to begin Monday night with the Toronto Argonauts visiting the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, but with players on both teams in a legal strike position, that game could be threatened. CFL Players Association president Scott Flory didnt return a telephone message Friday while a league spokesman said commissioner Mark Cohon wasnt available for comment. The Eskimos and Stampeders will include their rookies in the vote because Alberta law requires all players to participate. Traditionally, first-year players dont vote because theyre not recognized as certified union members, but the players association is allowing them to do so to counter any potential legal challenge from the league. Some other teams in the league will also hold second votes Saturday to include their rookies. The two sides have been negotiating on a new collective bargaining agreement since February but reached an impasse on Monday when the league rejected the players latest offer. The league and union last met face to face May 29. Despite turning down the players offer Monday, the CFL extended the ratification bonus deadline to midnight ET on Friday. If the players accepted the leagues final offer in that timeframe, veterans would receive a $5,000 bonus while rookies would get $1,500. TORONTO -- The family of a Canadian skicross racer killed two years ago at a World Cup event feels vindicated now that sport authorities no longer blame him for the tragedy and instead have made safety improvements to course design, their lawyer said Monday. Lawyer Tim Danson said the family of Nik Zoricic feels his legacy has become something positive and to be celebrated. "We were not prepared to accept that Nik was responsible for his own death," Danson told The Canadian Press. "We just wanted the truth to be acknowledged." In the immediate aftermath of his fatal crash at an event in Grindelwald, Switzerland, on March 10, 2012, ski officials angered the family and others in the skiing community by suggesting Zoricic, 29, was to blame for his death. The family responded by arguing the death was "entirely avoidable" and blasted the course finish line for being a "death trap." In a letter to his parents this month, the International Ski Federation (FIS) called Zoricic a "talented, experienced, and skilled" World Cup skier who did not take unnecessary risks. "It would therefore not be right to describe his accident as a freak accident or pilot error, the federations president and secretary general wrote. The letter further states that the federation has updated its safety guidelines and beefed up the staff and experts who help organizers construct a course and its safety measures. In skicross, several racers hurtle down a mountain at the same time, making jumps and taking curves on the way. Zoricic, who grew up in Toronto, had raced on the World Cup circuit for more than three years and was competing in his 36th event in Grindelwald when he was killed at the finish line of a tight three-way race. Video showed he was going as fast as 90 km/h when he veered to the right after the final jump, landing about a metre to the right of the official course line in "crud" rather than on a groomed shoulder. He snagged safety netting and tumbled into hard-packed snow, smashing his head. Among more stringent guidelines now in place is one calling for a much greater distance between the finish-line post and fencing. Hard objects, such as large mounds of packed snow, will no longer be allowed near the finish. "The fact that were making these significant changes is that there really are lessons learned from his death that will hopefully mean this kind of tragedy will never happen again," Danson said.
